About This Accessory

The 1045 Operating Flagman (also called the Operating Watchman) was originally sold by Lionel in the "prewar" era (the years before World War II). It was re-introduced in 1945 and was sold for six years (through 1950). The man stands 5 inches high, has flesh-colored hands and face, and is molded of blue Bakelite. A brass, diamond-shaped crossing sign with black lettering sits on a silver post. The base is painted red. A plate, which is attached to the base by tabs, identifies the accessory as "No. 1045 FLAGMAN."

Additional Details

Because of its size, some researchers have speculated that the 1045 Flagman may have been initially created to be used with standard gauge trains. The accessory was sold with a special contactor (#1045C) that is used to energize the man's arm.
