1655 Steam Engine & Box Tender (1948 - 49) |
---|
About This Steam Engine
The 1655 Scout-type Steam Engine was introduced by Lionel in 1948 and was sold
for two years (through 1949). This item consisted of two separate pieces: a steamer with a
"2-4-2" wheel arrangement and a whistling, sheet-metal, box tender. The engine was decorated
with wire handrails, ornamental bell, ornamental whistle, plus ample driving hardware. The
"1655" cab number was silver rubber-stamped. The tender has "Lionel Lines" on each side in
white lettering and the number "6654W" can be found on the bottom of the frame.

Additional Details
The engine (which did not smoke) came with an operating headlight. The metal motor inside the engine was a marked improvement to the plastic motor used in the first Scout engine (#1654). The tender featured staple-end trucks and either an operating magnetic coupler or an operating coil coupler.
