About This Steam Engine

The 1656 Steam Switcher was introduced by Lionel in 1948 and was sold for two years (through 1949). This item consisted of two separate pieces: an "0-4-0" steamer and a very desirable slope-back tender (either a 2403B or 6403B). The engine was decorated with wire handrails, ornamental bell, ornamental whistle, and a full complement of driving hardware. The "1656" cab number was silver rubber-stamped. The tender came with a wire handrail and white heat-stamped lettering.

Additional Details

The engine (which did not smoke) came with an operating front coupler and a headlight. The tender featured an operating bell, rear light, operating coil coupler, and staple-end trucks. Because of the high functionality of this steamer/tender combination, the 1656 is favored by operators over many of the other switchers made in the postwar era. In addition to the drawbar, the tender was hooked to the engine with two removable wires which served to maintain ground over switches & crossovers and to operate the front coupler.
