About This Diesel Engine
The 2245 Texas Special F3 Diesel was introduced by Lionel in 1954 and was sold
for two years (through 1955). This F3 consisted of two separate pieces: a "Power A" unit and a
"Dummy B" unit. It was produced in only one color scheme -- glossy red and white with red
lettering on white and white lettering on red. The power unit was also decorated with 2-piece
ornamental horns, numberboards, headlight lens, cab door ladders, combination M-K-T and Frisco
decals, plus a white star on the front. Both units also featured a louvered roof, porthole
lenses, and a silver frame. (Other variations included an A unit with a single,
vertically-mounted motor and the truck sides in black plus a B unit with closed-in portholes.)
The 2245 Texas Special is arguably one of the most attractive engines made by Lionel in the
postwar era. It is not easy to find in collector-quality condition.
