2332 Pennsylvania GG1 Electric (1947 - 49) |
---|
About This Electric
The 2332 Pennsylvania GG1 Electric was introduced by Lionel in 1947 and was sold
for three years (through 1949). This prototypical engine has been a favorite with many
collectors and operators for years. Its weight and massive size smacks of quality and allows it
to stand in a class by itself. The GG1's 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement, dual pantographs and
overall symmetry make it an easily-recognized piece of both railroading and model railroading
history. While some individuals have dubbed it "an ugly duckling," most of the individuals in
the hobby believe that no collection is complete without a GG1 and truly see it as an object of
beauty.
The 2332 GG1 came with a die-cast body that was painted either black (very rare) or Brunswick
green (common). Decoration included five rubber-stamped stripes, decals of the PRR keystone and
gold rubber-stamped lettering. Additional trim came from numbers on each end, headlight lenses,
red marker lights, ornamental horns and twin pantographs with white insulators.

Additional Details
The 2332 GG1 came with lights in the front and back, two operating coil couplers and a distinct, primitive-sounding horn. The pantographs could be wired so as to supply power to the motor via a catenary system (overhead wires). Although the 2332 is a smooth running locomotive, its pulling power cannot compete with the later GG1s, which had twin motors and Magnetraction. The lettering, striping and graphics on the 2332 did not hold up to normal handling or the passage of time. Consequently it is almost impossible to find an all-original 2332 in collector-quality condition. Nearly all of the unaltered shells are unreadable as the striping, numbers and lettering have been rubbed off. As a result, restoring 2332 GG1s has become a common practice.
