About These Passenger Cars
The 2421-2-3 Passenger Car series (marked by their silver bodies and black
lettering) was first introduced by Lionel in 1950 and was sold for four years (through 1953).
In 1950 and 1951, these cars were decorated with a thin black stripe above and below the row of
windows on each side plus black outlines around the windows. In addition, the roof was gray.
These attractive 3-car sets consisted of the 2421 Maplewood Pullman, the 2422 Chatham Pullman,
and the 2423 Hillside Observation Car.
For 1952, Lionel altered the cars' appearance by eliminating the black stripes and the window
outlines and by changing the roof to silver. The 2429 Livingston Pullman also made its debut in
1952 as Lionel began offering 4-car sets in this series. The Livingston, which only came with a
silver roof, is the hardest car to find in this series.
