| 3559 Operating Coal Dump Car (1946 - 1948) |

About This Railroad Work Car
The 3559 Operating Coal Dump Car was introduced by Lionel in 1946 and was sold for three years (through 1948). This car consists of a black sheet-metal frame with a red-painted metal bin. The operating mechanism is hidden inside a Bakelite housing which can be either black or brown. No markings are found on the side of this car. Lionel's catalog number ("3559") is rubber-stamped in either silver or white on the frame's underside.

Additional Details
The primitive-looking 3559 Operating Coal Dump Car reflects a carryover design from the prewar era. It is very similar to Lionel's 3659, which was produced from 1938 to 1942. The dump car is operated by means of a remote control track. The 3559 always came with staple-end trucks with coil couplers. Note that the first version from 1946 came with "flying-shoe" trucks and is much harder to find than the later version. Once fairly common, this car is no longer easy to find in collector-quality condition.
