42 Picatinny Arsenal Gas Turbine Switcher (1957)

About This Motorized Unit

The 42 Picatinny Arsenal Switcher was introduced by Lionel in 1957 and was only sold for that one year. This "2-4-2" motorized unit came with an unpainted olive-drab plastic cab and was decorated with white heat-stamped lettering. An ornamental horn and metal handrails -- which were white on the sides and black on the ends -- further helped to dress this unit.

Additional Details

This switcher came with two operating couplers and was designed to be used in a railroad yard to move rolling stock around. It has a small motor and should only be used to pull two or three light cars. Care should also be given to how this item is handled as the fragile window struts are easily broken. This is not an easy unit to find.
