53 Rio Grande Snow Plow (1957 - 1960) |
---|
About This Motorized Unit
The 53 Rio Grande Snow Plow was introduced by Lionel in 1957 and was sold for four years (through 1960). This "2-4-2" motorized unit is essentially a Vulcan yard switcher (similar to the 51 Navy Yard unit) but with a plow instead of a front coupler. It came with an unpainted black plastic cab and was decorated with yellow paint and black heat-stamped lettering. The yellow plow plus an ornamental bell and yellow painted, metal handrails on each side further served to dress this unit.

Additional Details
This switcher came with two operating couplers and was designed to be used by itself to simulate the clearing of snow from the tracks. It has a small motor and should only be used to pull two or three light cars. Care should also be given to how this item is handled as the fragile window struts are easily broken.
