About This Freight Car

The 6162-60 Alaska Gondola was introduced by Lionel in 1959 and was sold for only that one year. The body of the 6162-60 was unpainted yellow with dark-blue lettering. The car came with three red canisters -- either unmarked or with white lettering.

Additional Details

The Alaska roadname continues to be a favorite with both collectors and operators. The 6162-60 gondola -- which came in Set #1611 -- is one of 5 postwar Alaska items. The others are: the 614 NW2 switcher and the 6027 caboose from that set, plus the 6464-825 boxcar and the 6636 quad hopper. Many fans of the postwar era have collected all five and constructed the set they believe Lionel should have offered. The red canisters sold with the Alaska gondola were often lost. In addition the handles on top of the canisters are fragile and are easily broken. The 6162-60 always came with plastic AAR trucks.
