621 Jersey Central NW2 Yard Switcher (1956 - 1957)

About This Diesel

The 621 Jersey Central EMD NW2 Yard Switcher was introduced by Lionel in 1956 and was sold for two years (through 1957). This unit is a fairly accurate representation of a real NW2 Yard Switcher originally produced by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors (GM). The 621 was a true "Plain Jane." It came with an unpainted blue plastic cab with an orange decal of the Jersey Central logo and "621" heat-stamped in orange numbers. The only other trim included a silver ornamental horn and a gold ornamental bell. The 621 also has a sheet-metal frame with a center skirt plus front and rear end rails.

Additional Details

The 621 switcher came with an operating horn and two operating couplers. The later (more attractive) 611 Jersey Central NW2 Switcher -- introduced by Lionel in 1957 -- had non-operating couplers and a light but no horn. The cab of the NW2 switchers with sheet-metal frames is mounted by means of a fixed metal tab in the back and a screw in the front. Sadly this poor design has resulted in many shattered cab fronts as owners have tightened the screw too tight thus cracking the plastic. This diesel was designed to be used to jockey rolling stock around in a railroad yard. They are still seen on the real railroads.
