About This Freight Car

The 6315 Gulf Chemical Tank Car was introduced by Lionel in 1956 and was sold for three years (through 1958). The early version of the 6315 has these characteristics: metal trucks, unpainted black end caps, and an orange painted body. The later 1968-69 version had AAR trucks and an unpainted orange body with orange end caps. (Note that a 6315 Chemical Tank Car was also made by Lionel from 1963 through 1966 and lettered as 'Lionel Lines.') The early version came in two different colors (burnt-orange and orange) and various finishes. The burnt-orange finishes were flat, semigloss, and glossy. The flat and semigloss finishes are shown in the following photos.

Additional Details

With its metal dome platform, handrails, ladders, and size -- this car is arguably one of the most realistic freight cars offered by Lionel in the postwar era.
