68 Executive Inspection Car (1958 - 61) |
---|
About This Motorized Unit
The 68 Executive Inspection Car was introduced by Lionel in 1958 and was sold for four years (through 1961). This unique motorized unit is believed to be patterned after a 1958 DeSoto station wagon. It came in only one color scheme: a red-painted body with cream-painted sides and roof. Chrome-like plastic bumpers adorned the front and rear of the car. A chrome police car-type simulated light sat on the roof. This was the switch for the car's reversing mechanism.

Additional Details
The 68 Inspection Car was equipped with a motor that was geared low and hence is not very fast. It also came with a 2-position reversing unit (no neutral). In addition, these units tend to be noisy. The entire body of the 68 is somewhat fragile and cracks are common. The paint is prone to chipping, making this a hard item to find in collector-quality condition.
